One of virtualization's main benefits is the ability to move and balance workloads as they increase. There is no physical server with a set capacity. With virtual servers, if your system usage increases, your workload can be "moved" within the virtual environment, so you're never in danger of system overload. You can use this capability to perform system maintenance easily. Because a virtual server is housed in a physical one, the physical box will need occasionally need maintenance and repair work. When this work needs to be performed, your virtual server can be moved to a different location and transferred when the work is completed. VMware has free and licensed versions. Although the free version does not have all the management capabilities of the licensed version, it allows you to investigate the how virtualization works and how your business can benefit. VMware's management tools include Dynamic Resource Services for moving and balancing workload; Vmotion, for moving virtual machines from one physical server to another with no downtime; and a variety of management and automation tools.
